The bottom line: Tofu burrito is where it’s at!

I feel like Phat Burrito is a Charlotte staple that took me a long time to finally get to. With two locations, one at South End and the other in the Elizabeth neighborhood, I don’t know how I was able to stay away for so long. Anyways, the thing is I finally made it!

Phat Burrito touts itself as a Tex-Mex place and this is apparent based on their menu offering. They cover everything from burritos, quesadillas, tacos, tortilla salads, and the usual chips/salsa, guacamole, etc. The great thing about Phat Burrito is that they keep the menu to these offerings and don’t try to overdo it by encompassing all the other Tex-Mex dishes that end up in many menus (rice with meat, chimichangas, and on and on).

The South End location is very unassuming and has a cute patio that would be nice to hang out at during the summer. This restaurant is not the fanciest, but hey the food makes up for that! I ordered the tofu burrito since I am not a huge carnivore and often like to switch it up a little. At first I was a little apprehensive because tofu can be tricky. If you don’t cook it right it can be very bland, offering little to your taste buds.

However, the tofu burrito was delicious! It included all the usual fixings a burrito has (the Tex-Mex kind. Mexican burritos are way different): rice, lettuce, beans, sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes. And it was giant! But to cut to the chase what makes this delicious is the tofu. It was cooked just right with the appropriate amount of seasoning to make your mouth water. It probably was my favorite part of the dish. The only thing that I can complain about is that it was spicy. Now here I am not sure if it was because there was an extra jalapeño thrown in there accidently (I asked for no jalapeños) or if that is just how the tofu is seasoned. At first I was fine, but then the burrito just became too hot that I decided to not finish it :( If the seasoning is the culprit then it would be great if they had two varieties of tofu, one spicy one not.

Overall I really enjoyed my meal and would definitely make it a point to visit this place again when I am craving a tofu burrito. It seems like a cool place to go to  when you want to grab something to eat real quick with friends.

Update: I recently tried the BBQ steak burrito and all I have to say is OMG!! The flavors were out of this world! As much as I loved the tofu burrito, I have to say my new favorite is this one.
